Anorexia became a hot issue in Brazil after the deaths of four young women last month, including 21-year-old model Ana Carolina Reston.

Many people are blaming the fashion industry for portraying the thin image that some youngsters are obsess with, and lead to the danger of anorexia.

Other countries have also started to address what they see as the dangerous link between high fashion glamour and an unhealthy image of women. Madrid fashion week for example, made a bold move in September 2006 by banning overthin models on catwalk.

“Everybody knows the standard for models is to be thin,” Bundchen said. “But you can’t generalize and say that all models are anorexic.”

“I never suffered this problem because I had a very strong family base,” the supermodel told the local Globo newspaper Friday. “The parents are responsible, not fashion.”

Gisele Bündchen is one of the world’s top earning supermodel. She is also famous for her previous on-and-off relationship with Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio.

The actress is trying to create awareness of Chagas disease, which infects about 12 million people in Central and South America. It causes high fever, swelling, enlargement of the spleen, liver and lymph nodes, and inflammation of the heart.

The disease is spread by a bloodsucking bug that tend to live in the cracks and holes of poorer homes. The parasite may lie dormant for years but can eventually cause inflammation of the heart and possibly death. There is no cure.

Chagas is little known in the US, where about 100,000 have been infected. However there’s 16 to 18 million people that are infected with Chagas worldwide, and about 50,000 die from the disease every year.

Rivera appeared to be ok shortly. Pageant officials have addressed that it’s probably the weight of her dress and the heat on stage that caused the Miss Universe to pass out.

Rivera was wearing a dress made entirely of metal chains, and had been standing under hot stage lights for some time in the auditorium, luckily a security guard caught her as she fell.

Rivera, 18, won the title over 85 other contestants. Kurara Chibana of Japan was first runner-up while Lauriane Gillieron of Switzerland was second runner-up.

The 55th Miss Universe pageant contest was held at the Shrine Auditorium near downtown Los Angeles, just 40km away from where the first Miss Universe event was held in Long Beach, California, 1952.
