A suicide case in Hong Kong has made the headlines of all major Chinese newspaper because of the tragic cause.
It’s a long story (more details on cri.cn)… in short, a father was so over-committed to fulfilling his daughter’s dream of meeting her idol (Hong Kong star Andy Lau), that he spent all his fortune and finally commited suicide.
It’s sad to see young people wasting their life just to get close to the idols… it sounds harsh but I don’t feel sorry for the father at all… he pampered his daughter too much, and it’s just plain stupid, both of them.
At this site I’ve often seen comments from kids (presumably) that wanted to quit school to find their idol, and to fly to the idol’s location to see him/her in person blah blah… and I often condemned their intentions.
Fine enough if some rich kids are going here and there to meet their idols, but for most of the others… it’s unthinkable to waste your life being that fanatical over these idols.
Do love your idol, but not overdoing it… be logical and don’t overdo it.

Wow, that’s really messed up!
Good points you make Yummy. Reminds me of the conversation you and I had in your recent Avril Lavigne news story.
All this commercialism and “idol worship” get’s outta hand sometimes.

I just really have a hard time relating to how a person can get that obsessed over a celebrity. It’s just beyond me.

And I have a hard time understanding how her father could have thrown away all of his money and his family’s future just to fullfill his daughter’s insane obsession with meeting Andy Lau. Something was definitly wrong there.

If you can read Chinese, see http://ent.sina.com.cn/f/nfsbsfq/index.shtml for more details. What a pathetic family.

yes, as a fan, we must know our limitations … world is so beautiful, we can make some other things … and our “idols” will serve as our inspiration whatever we do … too bad some people are really “crazy” towards their idol… i knew a few people … but i am assuring myself .. i am not “overfanatic” hehe!! thanks for sharing this story …

your sooo right JOE…

Spot on joe… it’s one thing for the girl to be over-fanatic, but what’s her father thinking? It’s common practice not to criticize the dead, but in this case I just couldn’t keep it to myself… his obsession to fulfill her daughter’s dream is even worse than her daughter’s idol obsession. I just couldn’t understand… it’s sickening.
daomisyel… you are most welcome.
Thanks for the link roy_hu. It revealed further details about the matter, getting uglier than I thought.

I couldn’t get any of the additional details from that link cause I don’t read Chinese, but those pictures look pretty disturbing. Seems like a really tragic situation.

There are lots of twist and other info about the story, I don’t know where to start with… in his ‘death note’, the father actually blame Andy for lots of their ‘misfortunate’… I find it kinda hard to accept.
I was pretty pissed with their stupidity earlier… but now started to pity them as well. I think it’s a kind of mental illness, an obsession so strong that over-ruled all logical sense… the family was at the state of losing their mind..
The mother and daughter is back to China, but could be facing serious problem to support their life (and to return some debts)… there are reports that the daughter has not given her dream to meet Andy again in a more personal manner… but I sure hope that her father’s death is strong enough to awaken her from her unrealistic dream.

I tried to translate some of that yearly time line that showed their journey on the map. Seems that She had threatened to commit suicide back in April of 2006 if she couldn’t see Lau. They even had an TV interview in October where she and the father anounced arrangements had been met but no commitments would be honored. Is all that correct?
March 30th, 2007 at 5:30 am
She did threaten to suicide in April 2006. The October incident was that a TV station had promised to arrange a meeting for her and Andy, but it didn’t happen.
There’s an incident in March 2006 where the father had thought of selling his kidney to fund his daughter’s travel. The news was pretty wide spread and Andy had openly criticized the act, stating that he won’t meet any fans that are not filial and fans that are not using proper methods to see him.
This lady finally got to meet Andy a few days ago in a fans-meeting after some arrangement from Andy’s official fanclub… I guessed Andy might have soft-heartened for a moment to see this obsessed fan.
However, it’s said that this lady was not happy just to be able to take a photo and autograph after all the ‘sacrifices’, and thought that she should deserve more than other fans. Her father somehow shared the same thoughts and decided to commit suicide to protest against Andy Lau. (This is one of the story, apparently his ‘death-note’ is 12 pages long, there could be a combination of other factors as well)

The problem is that the whole family was too obsessed. They thought Andy Lau must marry no one else but the daughter. If Andy were to have a private talk with her, God knows what she would do.
Now that the father killed himself, the family thought it’s all Andy’s fault. They even hope the media would pressure Andy to aplogize to his father’s corpse or ashes or whatever.

Wow, That is just too bizarre!
March 30th, 2007 at 7:06 am
Somehow, I’m guessing Andy Lau won’t be apologizing for anything in this incident, lol.
March 30th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
Andy shouldn’t apologize… I guess he will issue a statement, probably saying that he felt sad with the incident, and advice his fans to be rational; but not an apology.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
Yep, I agree. He’s got ‘nothing’ to apologize for.
You know, the more I look at this thing, I see now that these people apparently got it into their heads that it was their daughter’s ‘DESTINY’ to marry Andy Lau. That’s been the driving force behind their relentless efforts to get her to meet him. Like was said before, they believed that Andy Lau must marry no one else but the daughter. And nothing was gonna stop them from making that happen. It’s just crazy, but like you said, kind of pity them that they lost touch with reality like that. It’s pathetic and sad.

i saw that girl crying on tv. and i was there, i wanted to slap her hard and wake her up. how can people be so obsessed over celebrities? are they randoms dumbbutts. and for her father… unbelievable! how can he have no control over her daughter like this. like come on. selling an appartment for travelling fee? that’s totally foolish and nonsense

So, what’s the latest on this. Has Andy commented one way or another?
