Hong Kong actor Tony Leung has quit the cast of “The Battle of Red Cliff.”

Tony explained that he’s exhausted from his current filming of “Lust, Caution” (directed by Oscar winner Ang Lee), and was afraid that he could not perform well in his role for Red Cliff.
The Battle of Red Cliff, directed by renowned director John Woo, is scheduled to start filming by end of March. John had personally stated his understanding for Tony’s decision. Currently it’s said that heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro will fill Tony’s role.

I’ve read that Ang Lee’s movies can be pretty grueling to work on. Everyone including Ang Lee himself were utterly exausted from filming “Crouching Tiger…”

Yupe. Also, mind that “Red Cliff” will be filming in China rural area for 6 months… it really test the cast and crew in both mental and physical strength.
I will miss Tony for the role, he is a great actor. Takeshi is handsome and should be ok, but when it comes to acting… he is still no match for Tony.

I definitly agree with that. Tony Leung is probably my favorite Chinese actor. He is just so cool and swave. I was first introduced to his acting in Wong Kar Wai’s “In The Mood For Love”. I was imediately sold on him and I fell in love with Maggie Cheung, lol. There was such a great chemistry between those two in that movie.
The other movie I liked Tony alot in was ‘Infernal Affairs” Great movie and great acting.

That’s a shame; Tony would’ve made a great Zhuge Liang. I’m seriously wondering if there isn’t someone more suited to the role that Takeshi Kaneshiro. It seems that he’ll be the token Hong Konger in this epic, following in the footsteps of Daniel Wu in The Banquet, and Jay Chou in Curse of the Golden Flower.
Its also a shame that Guan Yu wasn’t around for Chi Bi. If he had been, I’d be personally leading the campaign to make sure Anthony Wong was cast.

Dansk… true, Tony would be the best candidate to play Zhuge Liang. He can portray those unpredicatability and intelligence of Zhuge. Takeshi is a decent actor but he lack the depth to star as Zhuge… Takeshi could fit better as Zhao Yun perhaps.
Guan Yu only appears at the end of the battle of Chi Bi; he might feature in the movie but only as a small character… good point on Anthony Wong, he should make a good Guan Yu indeed.
