Malaysia born actress Michelle Yeoh (杨紫琼) will star as an astronaut (and biologist) in her latest movie “Sunshine.”

Directed by Danny Boyle, the sci-fi movie is about a team of astronauts trying to save the sun from dying. Also starring in the movie are Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy and Hiroyuki Sanada (真田 広之) etc.

Yummy, you being from Malaysia, of course know that Michelle was a former Miss Malaysia beauty contest winner in her younger days before getting into the HongKong marshal arts film industry. She is a very talented actress. I really got turned on to her from Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger movie, as was also my interest in Zhang Ziyi. Michelle and Ziyi really brought the attention of western audiences to Asian movies.
I have never understood why more American producers haven’t used her in more movie roles. Michelle’s first language according to her is English. She is very fluent. The only Asian actress that is probably more fluent in English that I know of would be Maggie Cheung. (That’s because Maggie grew up in London and speaks the “Queen’s English” lol) But anyway, I assume that because of the mixed cast, this movie will be done in the English language.

Michelle Yeoh came from my hometown actually. One of her nephews was my high school classmates for a couple of years… small world.
There are not too many roles available for Asian heroin in Hollywood productions. Pretty obvious Zhang Ziyi will be the first choice, and Gong Li with Michelle Yeoh coming behind.
Michelle does speak fluent English… I never knew Maggie Cheung grew up in London though. This movie is Hollywood production, in English definitely.

Oh yeah, Maggie was born in Hong Kong in 1964 and her family moved to the UK when she was 8. She went back to Hong Kong in 1981 to become a model.
Yes you are right, Asian movie actors and actresses are still slow to make it in Hollywood. But with people like Michelle and Ziyi getting more roles, that’s slowly changing. (Gong Li was good in Miami Vice last year).
It takes time. In the past, Asians such as Joan Chen and Luo Yan have tried with a little bit of success to bring more Asians into hollywood. But at the same time it has to be realized that it’s hard to write Asian parts into western movie scripts. It would be like a westerner trying to get a role in a wuxia film, where would he fit in? lol.
I will be watching closely for this Michelle Yeow movie.
