The mysterious man who’s Zhang Ziyi’s latest boyfriend finally revealed… he is Aviv ‘Vivi’ Nevo, an Israeli and one of the richest man in New York.
There are some early speculations about “who is the man?” Some said he is a French actor, some said he is a neighbour of US president George Bush… but the latest Chinese reports indicate that he is indeed New York investment mogul Vivi Nevo.

A bit more about Vivi Nevo… he is a venture capitalist, one of the largest shareholders of Time Warner (one of the largest media firm in the world); he was spotted going out with Kate Moss (UK supermodel) and rumored to be seeing Jeisa Chiminazzo (Brazilian supermodel).
Reports also said that Vivi Nevo is just 41, but he sure looks much older than that… he needs a stylist and some plastic surgery seriously if he’s just 41.

karena… glad to see a China peep with rational thinking. I do believe there are lots of China citizens that love Ziyi, but it’s a fact that lots of China people hates her as well. I am not sure which is the majority, but it’s certain that there are large group of people on both side.
Set aside the people, I felt that the Chinese press are being harsh on Ziyi… they always try to find the worst thing to write about her.
For your information, I personally are quite happy that Ziyi can find love… wish that she has a happy ending though; Vivi Nevo is rumored to be quite a playboy.

What I’ve heard is that it’s the Hong Long press that is not very nice to her because she is a Mainlander. I’ve even read interviews where she has said the HongKong press is mean to her. I believe most of the mainland Chinese people love her. As they should. She’s done alot for Chinese entertainment around the world.

China should embrace ZZ. They might as well face the fact that she (and Ang Lee) is pretty much responsible for bringing Asian movies to the attention of western audiences. Crouching Tiger was a huge mega-hit in the states and it made ZZ a star. I even admit she and that movie are what got me interested in Asian culture. I watched it (and her) probably 10 times when it was in the theaters and 10 more times on DVD. I honestly believe that if it were not for her success and popularity among western audiences, Rob Lowe would probably not have cast her, Michelle and Gong Li in “Memoirs Of A Geisha” They new she would make that movie a hit in America.
It’s a good thing that she is not racist towards white men and westerners. Because I can tell you that there’s hardly a white western man who wouldn’t jump at the chance to meet or date her, She is a classy, beautiful, and talented Chinese actress. And those Chinese people who hate her need to get past their hatred and prejudices and support this actress who is a fine representative of Chinese movie arts and a legend in her own time.

Thanks for the article and the translation karena. You are probably right that most Chinese do support Ziyi (or at least do hate her), but there are people that don’t like her as well… that’s part of life I guess, you can’t make everyone love you no matter how good you are.
I still believe (some) Chinese press are mean to Ziyi, not just on this occassion, but I often read stuffs that pick on small mistakes rather than the big achievements.

Hi, everyone! I was also kind of surprised to hear and see (in the newspaper) ZZ with an older guy and much more a non-chinese. I always thought that she is typical chinese lady. You know what I mean but don’t get me wrong. I think that no matter who she goes out with, it is her business and I think she is an intelligent woman. She can handle things on her own. We need not judge her by that and no one has the right to. I just hope that the guy really loves her and that her career would continue to flourish. She is a remarkable ambassador of China to Hollywood and I consider her one of great representative of Asia to the world, at least in terms of her contribution to movies.

Im white and from the things my Chinese friends tell me, she slept with Zhang Yimao while at Uni, hence the parts in his film. I wouldn’t agree but he did the same with Gong Li, so why not Ziyi? I’m Chinese American and I have no problem with inter-racial dating but I happen to dislike Ms Zhang’s personality. I think that she is a great actress but when I met her in L.A. in 2004 she was extremely rude. Firstly, thanks Apple! that information is enlightening on this topic–Zhang Ziyi is seeking not only money but is a publicity whore (different from just fame), to the point where even the Hong Kong tabloids know about her behavior and probably tire of her (that takes a lot), and for her to get more attention she just makes her golddigging target an american.
How do you know they are in love? (this is responding to the observation “gongzhenya” made) She’s an actress, even if she’s nothing great, she can pretend to be in love easily, just letting such an old creepy rich guy be with her is enough to convince him. She also has experience dating old men that can offer her connections.
Ah yes, Gong Li (mentioned by someone above), she was a respected actress, and publicly refused to do Hollywood movies because she was in critically acclaimed movies from China (different from Hong Kong movies), and because Hollywood would give her roles that made Chinese look bad. Well, her debut was in Miami Vice, where she played a whore. Nice going. What kind of roles were offered to her before if she finally makes her american debut with this whore role?
If you are Chinese, how can you be proud of her? (to “Anonymous, A Proud Chinese” and some others) She is Chinese, but she is selling herself out. What is there to be proud of? Her success? And anyways, even if this were not a political matter in terms of culture, and caucasian media representations, everybody agrees that she is just whoring herself out. If she was not Chinese, and was just caucasian, the answer would be the same, so “No.” This is not just a matter of that ‘betrayal’.
This stain on her image is just too bad, as her roles in Hollywood movies are generally alright, even though she is mean to fans as “JC” has experienced.

I might be a naive person here, but what makes you think Ziyi’s having sex with this guy? Ziyi’s family was reasonably traditional and she was reputed to be a good daughter and sister. With that kind of background it’s hard for me to imagine that she’d have sex before she is married, especially with a lot of more liberal American women intending the same thing. I don’t keep up with the famous folk, but I heard nothing about how Ziyi was a whore from more honest newspapers. In fact, I heard that the Chinese media were furious with how clean her reputation was and made up stories to soil it since she has never made a mistake in regards to what movies she was in, which is something extremely rare, if it happens anywhere else at all, so people were envious of her. I think if Audrey Hepburn existed in our time, she would have people calling her all sorts of names as well. As for what kind of person her lover is, what do you want him to be? Handsome? Young? Not as rich? Your own race? Or is that what you prefer your own boyfriend to be?

Media influence is a terrifying stuff these days… they have the power to manipulate the news, and the worst thing is lots of people do buy into it.
I have read lots of comments (and news) that Ziyi is a whore or that she is a bad girl… but honestly I haven’t seen any solid evidence that shown that she is not a good role model.

Firstly I cannot stand Zhang Ziyi – I think she’s a terrible actress and is a token Chinese in a lot of the roles she does. I hate that lip quiver thing she always does.
HOWEVER!!! – this boyfriend of her’s may not be traditionally good looking, but when you are as sucessful as her, you need a man of a certain status. Is she going to marry a man who ha a great heart but is a taxi driver? Of course not.

Ok … I am a fan of her work but not naive enough to think she hasn’t slept her way up the social and film industry, but who hasn’t. As for the cultural differences between the western world and the Chinese cultural, there is a big difference. The Chinese value tradition and family values much more than us westerners, especially most of us Americans. We are so media driven and much more materialistic than most other people in the world. I just think that it is pretty sad that we are here judging some actress about her life choices which have nothing to do with us and how we ourselves live our lives. If any other adult chooses to have sex or a relationship with some other adult it’s really none of our business. Let’s not judge her for her personal choices but for her work as an actress and entertainer. Try admiring people’s skills and abilities instead of being jealous of her fame and success. I am a Chinese. I like ZiYi Zhang. She has been proofing she is a powerful young woman in China who is earning her stake in both eastern and western filming industry by her talents, appearance, and hardwork. She has built her capacity to change people’s perception along the way. She can date whoever she wants as long as they are compatible and happy with each other. I don’t think some people in the US like the fact that Wendy Deng is married one of the rich guys on the forbe list. But I do believe that not many people here will question who the hell that lady is when Ziying is spotted dating a well-known guy. I am only worried if Ziyi is going to settle her low. With her charms, she has the chance to get herself with one of eligible rich bachelors on the forbe list if she is a gold digger. Appearantly, she is not.

Ok so here is the truth about Chinese people (Both mainland, HK and Taiwan)
1) Its sad, but we DO NOT HAVE NATIONAL IDENTITY, Ziyi is not the only who goes out for white men because they are white and rich. Asian men would do the same.
2) The reason Asian men don’t, well because we don’t own the media, we are weak as a group, and we would betray our own culture over money.
3) White men owns 80% of the world’s wealth, Chinese men…we don’t even get along in our own country.
4) Chinese people hate each other, we rather be hanging with White people (Yes, don’t deny it, it’s so true!)
5) China is a 3rd world country and I don’t blame Ziyi for selling out, it the destiny of our hatred towards ourselves.
6) Asian women hating Asian men and humping white guys, it is so common now and get used to it. (I know it is horrible, but please read item #4 again)

The tide is changing, my friends, with the rise of China and India, I dont know where you get your figures from but I do know for a fact that the 2 of the world’s top banks now are from China. There are many rich people in China now and its economy is poised to overtake the US. There is an element of truth in what you said about the control of media but do not underestimate the will and schrewdness of the chinese people. China used to be very prosperous in the past and very influential before they closed their doors and it is because they closed theirs doors, thats why the US was able to exceed them. But now China is the sleeping dragon who has awaken and the chinese people will increase not only in financial might but also in military and in media against the US. China is indeed rising very quickly and have faith that things will change in the very near future for all asians!! Dont be surprised to see white people reading celebrity magazines of Chinese stars, listening to chinese songs and throwing themselves to dating chinese men!!

I agree with Anonymouse above, there are many global US companies in the world today but dont forget the japanese and koreans also have their global brands(Sony, Samsung, Toyota) and the chinese will build their own global brands as well but the difference is that China is indeed in large country both in terms of their growing economy, population and military prowess and they will market their brands more aggressively than the japanese and koreans. Toyota has already overtaken Ford as the top car brand in terms of sales in the US, how much more so will the chinese brands be!! They have even sent a man into space, a probe to the moon, and are already in the process of building a space station, doing space walks and landing on the moon!! They have already started to expand their financial muscle by setting up bank branches in foreign countries like australia, snapping up foreign assets and expanding their influence! Dont forget, there are many people in China and by the time every child in china, poor or rich gets a basic education, can you imagine the number of potential nobel prize winners we can turn up??? Google may rule the online search engine domain today, ebay might be the major market place today but what makes you think baidu.com and alibaba.com will not overtake them in the very near future? Do not even think that just because things are the way they are right now means they are going to stay the same way in the next 50 years. Do not even think that the US is that powerful, look at how dependant they are on oil! Look at how much foreign reserves China is holding now that they can move world markets!! China will start to have its own media empire where they will export their culture and the world will slowly accept the trends that they set, much like the same way US is doing right now. It all boils down to the money and I know there are so many millionares in china right now, I believe more billionares will turn up in the next decade which will outnumber the number of billionares in the US. Watch up for the Forbes rich list!!! Indians are already making headway and they are not even at the peak of their economic cycle! Asian people, have confidence in yourselves cos the tide is finally turning in our favour!!!

There was an article in the Washington post stating that 75% of Chinese people in mainland has applied for Western countries visas, now why is that? It can’t be that China is so great that everyone wants to get out right?

Hello Mike, thanks for your quick response. I know that reality is part of life and the reality is that China is indeed rising! sure there would be problems but which country doesn’t have them? Things have indeed come a long way for us asians. Look at the blacks, because of the civil rights movement, blacks have managed to reach the epitomy of stardom in music, movies and the media. They had their struggles as well but it is thru great struggles that great things are born! And that is exactly what China is going thru and so is India. Nothing great will ever come easy. I dont know when the report in the Washington Post was released but even if that is true then, the opposite is also true! Many westerners also want to come into China and India and for what? To do business of course, thats where the action is. Anyway, there are already so many chinese in China, you take half the population, you still have more people in China than there are in the US. China is taking a very slow and controlled approach to opening up the country, and I think that would be wise. Look at how tightly they control the yuan and they will slowly bit by bit appreciate it in their favour. Dont get me wrong, I am not blindly optimistic neither am I celebrating anything but I think going by the sign of times, it is very positive for us compared to a decade ago. Kevin Rudd, the new PM of Australia is fluent in Mandarin and the daughter married a chinese from Hong Kong, if that is already happening at the top, it will flow down to street level. China is moving fast and slow in the right areas and I strongly believe that in our life time, we will see a great but gradual change in how arrogant westerners view us asians. Have confidence in ourselves, westerners are not that fantastic, they are just lucky that they have smart asians working for them in their home country to make them look more outstanding on the world stage but now with so many overseas asians moving east, the focus of power will move east as well. China has already used its influence and power to block US navy ships from docking at Hongkong, there is no way it is willing to submit to foreign powers anymore. To quote an example from Singapore, look at how one smart asian man – Lee Kuan Yew managed to turn a small island with almost next to nothing resources to a country that is richer than its neighbouring country, imagine how much more 10 Lee Kuan Yews in China can do!!

Yes China is growing but the GDP growth is not sustainable and already is cooling off. There are some HUGE social and economic issues ahead of China that dwarf anything the US or Japan had or will have to deal with. Over 600 million Chinese (over 1/2 the population) are poor farmers living in the countryside on $100 to $300 USD a year! The income gap is widening fast with terrible social consequences. Inflation will start to kick in, it is unavoidable. The Chinese RMB (Yuan) is highly undervalued and when it is forced to an enevitable truer market valuation Chinese goods will be more expensive and trade will slow. The Chinese economy is growing but the environment and public health is paying the price. The pollution in China is mind boggling. Even the top finance minister said last year to fix the environmental problems and address the millions of people sickened (and who will become sick) from pollution would be something like 10 years worth of GDP!!! The posters trying to knock down or saying we must attack the white men to build up the asian man are dumb racists. Chinese and white people can both be successful. Don’t forget even in the US there are millions of poor white people who are marginalized by the US govt. and do not reap the economic benefits yet they must deal with their daily living costs going up and up (food, rent (poor cannot get home in US), energy costs, public transport, education, hospital etc.) look at Katrina event and nearly 1/3 of US population has no health care! Not everyone in US is rich and elite, there are disenfranchised Chinese and also Americans. We need work together to raise the living standard of both nations for average people. The rich always get richer. China what happened to our socialist vision of Mao ze Dong? He would faint to see modern life, how corrupt CCP officials kill, steal and betray the people, how greedy business man do the same thing and exploit workers and the environment.

They DO get visas at the moment when they arrive another contry. That comes with being a celebrity. Take the Edison Chen scandal for example, I for one, would definitely like to hear you defend Edison Chen. Lets hear it laura. As long as you appear on the big screen, what you do up there is no longer private anymore. you will be subjected to the paparazzi and the public eye. Gillian Chung is a role model of many young and impressionable teenagers because of her clean and wholesome image. Are you telling me that what she did with Edison Chen is nobody’s business and these kids should just ignore it? These kids are already asking questions about the scandal and they might even think that it is cool to take nude photos and sleep around with whoever they want to just because their idol, Gillian Chung does it.

You underestimate the power of the media to influence your thinking and how you perceive yourself and others. You have been brainwashed and you dont even know it. When white men go out with asian women, do you even realize that they scoff at asian men at the same time? It is their way of undermining men of other races when they go out with colored women, and you think they are not racist when they go out with you? or is your mind so colonized that you dont even perceive that? and even turning your claws on your own people?

I think your argument went extended to the point of irrelevance. I believed that there is little moral issue involved with Xiyi’s dating with Vivi. It was very unpleasant to see how the unkind wish to be casted to her dating with Vivi. Then came with my two cents. Please stay on the track if you want to be a good debater. But I don’t think we could debate on the common ground as I am very insufficient.

Laura, dont confuse ideological differences, sovereighty issues and international politics with racism. Cultural Revolution in China was about a clash of ideological differences and not because of one race trying to enslave another. The issue with Tibet and china is one of sovereignty and NOT racism. Same thing with the history of Russia. Racism in its simplest definition just for you, Laura, is to discrimate another person or groups of people based simply on skin color. You can’t even tell when racism is racism.
It is better to face the truth of whats really happening in the world rather than to bury your head in the ground and pretend all is fine and dandy by being “simple”. Lets face it Laura, you choose only what you want to believe and dont have the courage to face the truth. The only thing the truth can do is to set you free, not cause cancer as you so equate it with.

You’re funny. As I am reading your comment, I find myself laughing out loud. That being said, I must say your perspective on the Hollywood media may be a little skewed. You have failed to notice/mention other national media often portrays visible foreigners as villains (speaking particularly of HK films). Especially HK films made in the 80s and 90s, often the foreign character (if there is one) will take on the role of a villain and also possess terrible acting skills (as though the casting agent casted the first foreigner in his line of vision). I don’t agree with the “white media” intent to insult Asian men. I agree, however, there is a limited pool of characters that are written for Asians in Hollywood. I don’t really see a problem in that as the same reason I don’t see a problem in HK films ridiculous portrayals of foreigners. As to your idea to solidify Asian men in the media, it already occurs in HK (i.e., Andy Lau) and likely in China and probably won’t happen in Hollywood until half the population of China decides to migrate to America, thus making Chinese the prominent race.
I guess I should make a comment on Zhang Ziyi since this is a forum about her. I don’t think she is particularly attractive, but understand why people (especially non-Chinese) find her physically attractive. I enjoy some of her movies and also feel her celebrity status is a pass for the media to scrutinize every aspect of her private life (if she sells tabloid magazines), but as long as she can live with her own choices, she’s golden.
