Definitely, when I think of Depp I think of captain Jack Sparrow (sp?) straight away… wonder if it’s really good news for an actor to have such a defining role.

My personal opinion is, for Johnny Depp it’s not gonna hurt him at all. For as long as he’s been acting and all the different roles he’s been in, he has already proven how versatile he is. He’s already been a fairly big star in his own right. So, there would be no real danger of him being ‘typecast’ from now own.
Whereas, some younger artists may get typecast early on in their careeres and never be able to break into other types of character roles.
I think the Jack Sparrow role is just the icing on the cake for Depp. He fit it so well. But he can pretty much move to any role. Johnny Depp is a really good actor IMO and has shown that to the industry numerous times.

You are probably right… I think the only missing thing for Depp is an Oscar now; that will complete him as a great actor.
