Korean TV channel MBC is planning to make the sequel of popular 2003 drama “Dae Jang Geum” (or “Jewel In The Palace”). The sequel will be using the same production team, including director and screen writer, but there will be changes in the main cast.
The main actress of all in the first series, Lee Young-ae ((pic on our left) will not be featuring in this new production, and will be replaced with a relatively new star, Jeong Yu-mi (pic on our right).
Dae Jang Geum was one of Korea most successful TV drama ever, and it sparked huge interest worldwide about Korean culture and bring huge crowd of travellers to Korea to learn about their history.
The original Jewel In The Palace story was about the life of Korea first female royal physician back in the Joseon Dynasty, her name was Jang Geum, and the character was played by Lee Young-ae.
It’s said that the new sequel is using a new actress because Lee Young-ae has become so popular that her pay become very high, and the production cannot afford to pay her salary.. thus going for Jeong Yu-mi instead.
Yu-mi was quite a familiar face in Korea with some commercial advertisement, but she has only a few acting experience.. so it’s quite a suprise news for her to be picked for the important role.
No official news about what the storyline of the sequel, it will be kept as secret according to a MBC spokeman. Hope that Yu-mi will play as well as Young-ae, and hope that the new sequel will be as good as the original.

Lee Young-ae for sure played her role to perfection.. I can hardly think of a better actress to fit her role.
If there’s really a new version of Dae Jang Geum, I think it’s good for both the drama and LYA if she’s not in it..
There’s a possibility that the new version won’t be as good as the old one, no point for LYA to risk spoiling her perfection as Jang Geum.
As for the drama, they can have more freedom to try something new with a totally new cast.

now, which is which?? If I’d have a choice LYA would still be the best Jang-Geum…no offence to Yu-Mi….but look at Goong 2….most sequels would not turn out as good without the original actors/actress acting in it…

I don’t see any seeding done for the sequal in the first series. Besides, I do not believe that money is the issue for Lee Young Ae. After their huge success any amount of money should be no concern. If there is going to be a sequal it is guarateed that it is againg going to Lee Young Ae. As long as the producers keep exposing the contemporary Korean social-issues using nation’s past history as the background to hop on, Lee Young Ae is going to be their “must have surgeon” delivering the incisions to the dormant korean social consciousness. A lot of people are greatful to her for the superb teaching she has done in showing the way to harmony between men and women relationships.

It’s a good idea to make the second film. But………. if you’ll change the main character player you’ll lose-be sure. The experience shows that all the actor or actress changes in the serials are unlucky. Especially, an actress like Lee Young-ae is irreplaceable. I personally ask to lee young-ae to make a contrat with the same condition terms.

DİZİNİN İKİNCİSİ ÇEKİLMEYECEKMİŞ!
2005 yılında böyle heber çıkmış. Hem de bu haber bizden değil Çin’den gelmiştir.
Fakat Kore’de ilgili oyuncular ‘bizim haberimiz yok’ demişler. Çin’de de Saraydaki Mücevher yayınlanmış ve çok sevilmiş. Bundan dolayı Çinliler herhalde fazla ileri gitmiş olabilir.
Ve saraydaki mücevher’in yönetmeni şu an Kore’de diğer dizi çekilmektedir. (yayınlanmaktadır)
Bu haberi Kore’yle ilgili bir Türk forumundan aldım, büyük ihtimalle doğru bir haber. Zaten haber 2005 yılında çıkmış çekilseydi 3 yılda çoktan çekilirdi :)

became famous pf DJG series. I believe LYA is willing to receive not too high salary as long as is quite sufficient enough. You said she’s too old for the role. I agree with Sky’s opinion.Better not make DJG2 at all. Instead why not make another beautiful classical/legendary story starred by LYA of course
LYA is already inactive for quite a long time, don’t waste your time & don’t make us waiting too long. May I suggest e.g.why not adapt the beautiful story of Taj Mahal into Korean version, story about Emperor Shah Jehan who loved his beautiful Queen Mumtaz (should be played by LYA). Come on, hurry up MBC or any other Korean/Chinese/Japanese TV producer.we esp.huge Chine fans are impatiently waiting.

Plus, it will bring big impact to its fans and viewers… They loved, love and will love “Dae Jang-Geum” for what it really stands for.. In my personal view, changing casts esp. major casts will affect the result and has greater probability of the TV series’ downfall…
Everybody loves Lee young-ae now, so why change her? it is a great disappointment and depression for us ! It will not be “Dae Jang-Geum” anymore. If you will change the casts, then change the title cause there can be only one “Jang-Geum” and that is “Lee young-ae”.. it will be a great insult for the followers if you make some unecessary changes..

Truly without prejudice, have you really tried asking her (LYA) does not want to act in the second show just because of money.
What a waste not to have her act again? How many are looking forward to her next show? Please considering negotiating again with her.
