2 of the Korea biggest superstar actress, Ha Ji-won and Song Hye-kyo will be starring the same character ‘Hwang Jin-i’, based on the real life stories of a 16th century Kisaeng.
vs
Different is, Ha Ji-won will be starring in a TV drama while Song Hye-gyo will be acting in a movie instead.
People in Korea can’t wait to make comparisons between these 2 popular actress, wondering who will excel in the end.
Ha Ji-won has upper hand though, she already acted in some Korea classic TV dramas and movies; whereas this will be Hye-kyo’s first attempt as a 16th century character.
Both of the stars have to practise in traditional dancing and Geomungo (a music instrument) before starting the actual filming.
A bit about the story of Huang Jin-i (wiki)..
Hwang Jin-i (or Huang Jini), also known as Myeongwol (’shining moon’), was one of the most famous Kisaeng (similar to Japanese Geisha) of the Joseon Dynasty (16th century).
Jin-i was the child of an aristocratic man in Gaeseong; accounts of her mother vary, but many indicate that she was a blind woman named Hyeon Hak-geum.
Because her mother was of cheonmin birth she was unable to marry into a yangban family because of different classes, which was heavily emphasized during the Joseon Dynasty.
Thus, Jin-i became a kisaeng herself and quickly rose to fame thanks to her beauty, intellect, and preternatural talent in playing the geomungo.
Thanks to her fame, Jin-i is among the few kisaeng whose names have survived. She is said to have received a typical aristocratic education in her childhood, studying the Chinese classics.
When she was fifteen, a nearby bachelor is said to have died of love for her. After becoming a kisaeng, she carried on with various notables including Ji Jok-am, and also associated with the philosopher Seo Gyeong-deok. Her place and time of death are unknown.
Several geomungo compositions attributed to Jin-i have been preserved, as have a handful of her sijo poems reflecting on the famous sites of Gaeseong, such as Manwoldae Palace and the Bagyŏn P’okpo waterfall.
In the late 20th century, Hwang’s story began to attract attention from both sides of the Korean divide. Her life has been depicted through media including fiction, film and opera.
Novels dealing with her life include a 2002 novel by the North Korean writer Hong Sok-chung, which was the first North Korean novel to win an award in the South. Another novel, by South Korean writer Jeon Gyeong-rin, became a bestseller in 2004.

August 23rd, 2006 at 3:00 pm
Both of them are good actress, it’s just a matter of who suit the character better. Stop calling bad on any of Ha Ji-won and Song Hye-kyo, those insulting comments will be deleted, no question.
September 2nd, 2006 at 7:25 pm
Hey, did u guys know that the movie songhyekyo is doing for this has a sex scene in it. Read somewhere that the director and people don’t want the focus to be on that. But Songhyekyo and the movie makers were all worried about how to depict it so it won’t affect her “nice-girl” image and the movie. I can’t wait to see it, I hope it would become an uplifting classic! SongHyeKyo AJA AJA!!
September 2nd, 2006 at 8:11 pm
Song Hye-kyo will be playing as a Korean Kisaeng (like Japanese Geisha), bed scene is quite logical.. no worries, I bet they will make it artistic, Korean directors are good at it.
September 18th, 2006 at 1:36 pm

[...] Korea actresses Ha Ji-won and Song Hye-kyo have been the talk of the town for both acting as the same character Hwang Jin-i (or Hwang Jiny), based on the real life stories of a 16th century Kisaeng. [...]

I believe the best actress for the role as a “hwang jin-i” is Ha ji won. The reason Ha ji won fits the role because of her acting skills. Song Hye kyo’s popular is based mostly on her physical attributes. Don’t kid me wrong, Kyo’s acting is good when it comes to romantic dramas. Ha ji won can act from a comedian to an undercover detective. Her films is a fact of how she is so successful. So, therefore HJW is the perfect actress for this role.
To become an excellent actress, just dont consider upon looks but how she presents the role of a character.
October 9th, 2006 at 1:16 pm
Good point Pahua. What I think is that Ha Ji-won will definitely fit the role, she acted in a couple of those ‘dynasty’ dramas, and she’s a sporty girl.. should learn all those dancing rather easily.
Hye-kyo does have the potential, but we can only tell after her movie released. Who knows if Hye-kyo might suprise everyone!
October 14th, 2006 at 2:10 pm
Ha ji won the BEST OF ALL for ma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 14th, 2006 at 2:12 pm
I love Ha ji won…
October 23rd, 2006 at 11:39 pm
well, of course … i like Song Hye Kyo the most..shes the prettiest among other korean actress.. i cant wait watching her play the role of a 16th century heroine..it will be fanstastic..but who is the hero than..i hope it is WON BIN or RAIN..Hahahaha:)
Ha Ji Won is sucks…she’s not pretty…and she will make the drama lost
November 19th, 2006 at 11:17 pm
ha ji won is a great actress. not talking about looks wise but acting wise. For those of ur insulting ha ji won. shut up and go watch her series and see for urself.
Ha Ji won has won awards mind you…# 2004 Baek Sang Best Actress Award
# 2000 Blue Dragon Best Supporting Actress Award
# 2000 Pusan Film Critics Assn. Awards Best New Actress so she IS a quality actress.
Song is great too…i wun deny..just stop comparing them for heaven’s sake since they’re acting styles are different.
I support both! Song and Ha all the way!
November 21st, 2006 at 6:33 pm
I also think that Ha Ji Won is fit in this character…..because…..I like her in her role in ‘demo’……
November 25th, 2006 at 1:18 pm
yuck guys! ha ji won is not that great! SONG HYE KYO IS THE BEAT! ask anybody… they will answer hye kyo… she’s more good in acting and ha ji won is not that kinda good… she looks like a bold star but not an actress…
November 28th, 2006 at 3:00 am
i tink the awards speak for themselves right..hehhe..
not all her movies are good, but she has her shining moments…support ha ji won..!!
anyway i tink that they are both acting the same role..so both prob equally good too!!
November 30th, 2006 at 12:11 pm
ha ji won would best fit the role! period! there’s no denying that she an edge over song hye kyo, i mean with the “dynasty” drama and movie that she has made like “damo” and “the duelist”, she woul have no problems in portraying a “kisaeng”. song maybe beautiful than ha, there’s no denying that, and i know that she is a talented actress as well, but if compared to the awards that ha ji won already has, she has still got a lot to prove to be on the level that ha ji won has already achieved and reached.
January 11th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
there is really nothing to worry about their acting skills…we all know they are both great and take note HJW fans that SHG also has numerous acting awards undre her belt, plus her edge among other actresses is her being incredibly beautiful, personality and physique wise so she is absolutely one of the stars to watch out for again this year, especiallly in this movie Hwangjin-i..so i guess, that’s all i can say…
March 4th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
I think Song Hye Kyo is Better than Ha Ji Won,,The acting is very good in Full House Film,,,aza,,aza Fighting!!!
March 6th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
i support both ha ji won and song hye kyo..they are both my fav actress.!!
April 6th, 2007 at 8:56 pm
both ha ji won and song hye kyo are my fave korean actress… they give life to the story of a giseang named “hwang jini”… they both give justice to the role.. i hope hye kyo will also get award for the movie like how ha ji won got her award for the television series
April 22nd, 2007 at 10:11 pm
i can’t wait for dis movie!!! and for those who said song kye kyo is not fit for the role than don’t watch it ?? just stick with the 24 ep drama which ha ji won is on geezz!! and don’t even dare to watch dis movie wait until ha ji won get the role for it. .
You can’t just say that ha ji won fit the role betterthan song kye kyo when u not even see the movie .
And for ur information : if ha ji won fit for the role than y would the director chose song kye kyo than ????? duhhhh tell me.
Ps. most Kisaeng ( geisha in japan ) is support to be pretty and beautiful Gosh!!
April 28th, 2007 at 8:38 pm
Ha Ji Won Is the Best Actress .I love her.
April 28th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Iam Like Ha Ji won .She is very beautiful
June 28th, 2007 at 4:38 pm
I adore Ha Ji Won a lot. She is beautiful, has a great body and a very talented actress. Song may be more beautiful than Ha, but she doesn’t have the body to match her looks. Besides, most of Song’s awards are mainly because of her looks and popularity not because she is good in acting. She actually sucks in acting..
June 28th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
SONG HYE KYO ALL THE WAY!
SHE GOT ALL!
Looks, style, acting skills.,., she has the most ability to make the people be carried away with her tears!
AZA AZA FIGHTING!
June 28th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
if SHK will have that bed scene thingee.,., no please! she’s gonna lose her career coz it would probably suck her “nice” image.,., she has the best looks ever! she can make everyone smile and cry.,, but if that mocie will just create a great devastation in her image,.,., NO!
July 6th, 2007 at 7:04 pm
I bet Song Hye-Kyo won’t do the bed scene or something sexy. She won’t absolutely flaunt her body, coz she doesn’t have the body to flaunt in the first place!
July 6th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
victoria…
This reply may be late, but this will be worth for Ha Ji Won’s fans. Ha Ji Won may look a bold star to you, but girl that’s because SHE GOT THE BODY!! Don’t you compare her to “nice girl” Song Hye-Kyo, coz SHK lacks the height and the “body”.
July 27th, 2007 at 9:24 am
song hye kyo!!!
she really fits the role …..because she’s gorgeous! and a good actress
September 22nd, 2007 at 3:56 am
I go for Ha ji won! both are pretty but i think ha ji won has a more dramatic sense than song hyo gyo has. If we compare both of them, we only see one feeling that song hy gyo is showing off, she is too one sided in personality..
October 11th, 2007 at 11:43 am
DARNA is the best hahahaha
October 11th, 2007 at 5:33 pm
ha ji won is better..because the costume the role is really mtch with her..she looks prettier wearing tradional dress for kisaeng
October 13th, 2007 at 3:58 pm
they..bith…did.it…….very….nice….and….awesome……………..
October 16th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

November 1st, 2007 at 11:53 am
both of them are so very beautiful so it has no bases to have an arguement between the two of them……more power to both of them…
November 2nd, 2007 at 5:58 pm
Hwang Jin-i is a verry beautiful drama and both Ha Ji-won and Song Hye-kyo are good actresses. So let us just wish the best for both them. And I hope they could have a chance to visit Philippines.

gosh!!!huang jini was very beautiful korean novela..i really really love it.hope it will repeat soon!!
November 26th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
I have seen both the movie and the drama series. Both are good. But I prefer Ha Ji Won, her facial expression and body language seems more natural in Hwang Jini, makes you more into the drama. I have seen her acting skills in other dramas and movies too, she is absolutely an amazing actress. Love this girl.
December 3rd, 2007 at 2:22 pm
If the real Hwang jin i saw the film made for her, I believe she will be very proud and honored to recognize her as an ARTSIT. She will be very dignified especially Ha Ji Won portrayed her elegant story. Ha Ji Won must be recognize all over the world as one of the best ACTRESS and ARTIST of our age.Congrats Ha Ji Won. I hope you will make more fantastic movies and soon visit the Philippines. Mabuhay and we love and support you in the Philippines.
December 3rd, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Galing mo talaga Ha Ji Won. Sana marami ka pang makabuluhan teleserye na maproduce, and i congratulated GMA 7 network for recognizing Hwang jin i to be aired in the Philippines.
December 16th, 2007 at 10:13 am
eun ho…… I LUV U……
December 16th, 2007 at 10:16 am
huang jini is great…….
March 9th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
I must say that the both of them played Hwang Jin Yi very well but I think Ha Ji Won is a better character. She’s more powerful, a bit more ruthless in the drama, her character is very well played and I think her dances are shown more. Whereas in the movie we don’t get to see Song Hye-gyo dance. She did very little playing in music and she shows very little fighting for what she wanted. I love the drama because it shows a lot of Korean culture, dances, and it history. The costumes was very well designed and the people in it are all very beautiful. I love the drama for many many reasons and I would watch it over and again, (if I could find where to watch it, because everywhere I USED to watch it, took it down). I recommend this drama to ANYONE!
