“The Return of the Condor Heroes” produced by CCTV is scheduled to premiere in China by March 17, 2006. The TV drama was based on the popular same title novel by Jin Yong (aka Louis Cha).
It’s not the first time that Return of the Condor Heroes was made into movies and TV dramas, almost every 2 or 3 years we will see a new version of it, and the fans always seem to support the show.
It’s a martial art cum forbidden love story between Yang Guo (starred by Huang Xiao Ming) and his master Xiao Long Nu (starred by Crystal Liu Yi Fei), with a mystic condor and massive cast of roleplay and story plot around the final years of the China Song dynasty.
With the previously successful and popular production based on other Jin Yong’s novel like “The Legend of The Condor Heroes” and “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils,” the China production studio CCTV was putting great expectation for this multimillion production.
To create some buzz for the movie prelaunching, CCTV also selected China SuperGirl contestant Jane Zhang Liang Ying to sing the opening song.
UPDATE The TV drama is released in China and all across Asia, and is one of the most popular China TV production ever.

I have only just discovered the graphic novels, i’ve only read vloumes 14-18 of the Return of the Condor Heroes. Yang Guo reunites with Dragon Girl so i presume that was the end. I greatly enjoyed it and want to know more about the live action versions, can u help?

The CCTV series for “Return of the Condor Heroes” will soon be showing in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.. should be available in Singapore and Malaysia in a few more months.
If you are not from Asia it might take you longer to see the tv series on screen.

I’m in Canada, and I’ve read the whole series of the graphic novels. I have also watched the first version with Andy Lau. Hopefully the new version will come to VCD and have English translations on them.

Hi Nick, I can’t confirm anything, but the VCD will probably only be available after 6 months.. I believe it will have US versions which at least will have English ‘text’ if not translated to English.

The story itself should be quite interesting, it’s base as one of the best martial arts + love novel by Jin Yong. Question is how good the series are made only..

I’m a great fan of ROCH since I was young, I recently re-watch the 83 version which is better than the 95.
And I’ve just discovered Liu Yi Fei last week with Demi Gods & Semi Devils (Heaven Dragon The Eighth Episode), and she’s good actress but not little too young for playing Xiao Long Nu ? It doesn’t matter else, I just want to see this 2006 version which looks great & beautiful.
But I will wait a long time to watch it because I’m in France and I can only watch vietnamese version or chinese with english subtitle… (damned ! the dvds have only chinese subtitle)
I hope that people who see it will comment it

Thanks for the info and research! This is my favorite story of all time. I’ve been wanting to watch the 1983 version for so long, but with my weak vietnamese and non-existant chinese I’ve been limite in options. I recently bought the newly release 83 version with English subtitles and love it! I hope this version comes out with english sub soon!

Liu YiFei is very cute and a good actress. It will be interesting to watch although she seems a little young to play the role as Yung Guo’s master. Anyhow, i can’t wait to watch it.

The 83 version is a great one, many still believe it’s the best ROCH ever made.
I think Liu Yi Fei looks gorgeous to play Xiao Long Nu.. and maybe will look a bit too young.. after all Xiao Long Nu will be 30+ years old by the end of the story.
The guy that played Yang Guo is Huang Xiao Meng.. I can’t remember exactly what series he has been starring.. that’s a series that named something like “Han Emperor” that he played the leading role.

Li Mo Chou is played by Jessey Meng (孟广美).
Model and talk show host, occassionally acting.
In 1997 she starred in a Hollywood movie “Red Corner” with Richard Gere, she is however not the leading actress.

kleng.. Return of the Condor Heroes will be show in a few Asia countries in May. I don’t have much ideas on how good this version will be, but the show is quite a big hit in China, so hopefully it will be good.

I’ve just finished watching the manderin dvd version.. and i think it’s really great!! I can’t compare to the one of 83 cuz i was very young when i watched that one..

The 2006 series is great exept for some details.. the CG is poor.. but the effects are good.. also noticed Yang Guo got boots with some profile on it from this age.. :p

ROCH just started airing here in the Philippines last Monday. It was so amazing and I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen! Crystal Liu Yi Fei is so beautiful and talented. GMA changed the title because it wouldn’t make sense to Philippine viewers to have a series titled “Return of the Condor Heroes” when it is the first of its kind shown on primetime TV :D They really took a big risk on this one, but it paid off. On its first week, ROCH rated a high 38% - a slaughter of the opposing show. I hope it continues to enjoy high ratings all throughout its run.
I’m loving the series so far, and many more Philippine fans are enjoying as well.

You can get the English translation of the novel at Wuxiapedia.com. All in all there are 4 books. Once you get the main page, choose “Novels” & then click on “Jin Yong”. The title of the novel in that website is called Divine Eagle, Gallant Knight & it’s the 2nd novel of a trilogy.
There are other wuxia themed novels on that website too so if you’re a wuxia lover like I am, then you’ll really love that website. Also, some of the translations might be a little weird as (if I’m not mistaken) the translators are Chinese educated & some words like smile same up as slid/sli so you have to bear with it.

Hi everyone pinoy here as well, just finish watching the whole series. Nice fight scenes, a heart-felt love story and great effects. Just couldn’t stop thinking of the series since I set my eyes on it on GMA. I love Liu Yi Fei, her role is so innocent and very charming. for some reason GMA7 changed its title to catch more audience attention. Maybe using “Love” instead of “Return” gives an immediate perception for the audiences of the series as a love series instead of just plain action series. wow, Love of the Condor heroes is really amazing. fresh faces in Philippine television during primetime is really such a good idea. Unlike in other stations, local and even programs from other countries are all stale. Go GMA!
Anyway, isn’t it just right for GMA to change the title in order for the Filipino viewers to realize that it is something to look forward to? Using “Love” instead of “Return” is really a good idea so that people will not be confused. If they use the word “Return”, viewers will ask why i’ts a return. They are no yet familiar in Jin Yong’s trilogy novels. So, that’s realy such a nice concept. GMA is really number 1! To GMA, thanks for acquiring the best programs among the wide array of programss in the whole of Asia. Really good…

I’ve just watched the whole ROCH 2006 (PRC) series. It is the best of all the other series, like the two ROCH series from TVBI and the Singapore version.
The graphics and sword fighting sequence are superb.
Liu Yi Fei played Xiu Long Nu very well. Her youthfulness and body language reflect the character in the book. I agree with what sago (Item 64, May 8, 2006) says. Liu Yi Fei’s beauty is truly breath taking.

crystal liu yi fei, is so pretty. i googled her & turns out she’ only 18. no wonder she looks so young. and i heard that she has signed up as a singer as well with sonny or sony music? not so sure about that.

To Yummy: i think that it is the first wuxia series in here. usually what they show in here are the tragic korean love stories starring Choi Ji Woo & others. it is such a nice change.

Yes, it’s the first of its kind to air in the Philippines, my country. I just want to explain why I think the station that acquired it changed the title:
The title “Return of…” implies that the show is a SEQUEL to something. Like “Return of the Killer Tomatoes” (??). If people here have never seen the original “Legend of the Condor Heroes,” it won’t make sense to the audience. “Huh? Return? Who’s coming back? We’ve never seen them before.”
I think the new title is more fitting. Or maybe they should have made it “The Condor and the Lovers” but then, people would wonder early on, “Where’s the bird?” I think “Love of the Condor Heroes” is just fine.
And the theme song they adopted for it - a song from a few years back by veteran singer/composer Ogie Alcasid - is quite romantic and fits with the story. Just not for an action series though. But Filipinos are die-hard romantics so it’s cool that way.
Anyway, thanks for this blog. I know this story has been remade many times and the story is familiar to Chinese and other Asians. I’m part Chinese but I’m new to this genre. I love it though. More power and fly high, Condor lovers!

Oh and about the age….
Well, people here don’t mind because most of them (myself included) have never seen any other version of ROTCH. Sometimes that can be a good thing; that way they can enjoy the present series without comparing it to previous ones.
Maybe Crystal Liu seems too young to play the lead female. But if you’ve never seen ROTCH before, it won’t bother you much. The only thing that does bother me as I sometimes wish the Yang Guo actor was younger. Isn’t it strange how a grown up man is adoring an innocent-looking girl as his master? But it doesn’t matter. The show rocks! :)
Also, since a new version of this novel is made every 2-3 years (it seems), then it makes sense for the creators do it a little differently each time. That way it will still be new. And since many think that the 1983 version can’t be topped (acting and casting wise), then maybe they did the right thing in giving a different version of Xiao Long Nu in the 2006 version. Instead of imitating the earlier one, make something new, you know?

Hi all, I am from Canada and I an currently on ep 14. Since I can’t read chinese or understand it, i have to wait for the eng subs to come out each week. So far i really enjoy this new remake. Everything is great, especially Liu Yi Fei (true beauty). I saw the original when i was a little kid, don’t remember much of it except the stinkinnnnggg priest. I hate him. I hate him again now. I wanna kill that priest. It will be awhile before i can see the whole thing in eng subs. But so far it’s worth the wait. I’ll probably watch it again once it comes out in viet dubs. probably about 1 year.

Seems like almost everyone cannot wait on what will happen on the whole 41 episodes of ROCH 2006… hehehe. ROCH is a bit incomplete when it comes to ending. The series doesn’t show the scene where they return to the summit of Hua Shan to visit Ouyang Feng and Hong Qi Gong’s graves, Yang Guo was declared the Western Passionate Lover (one of the Great Five) and leads to their meeting with a monk that introduces to them the Nine Yang Manual when they’re only known with the Nine Yin Manual that eventually leads to the end of the story. How I wish I could add some continuation stories between Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu after the night XLN and YG walked down the mountain together and part with the others to continue their love story. I’m still wondering though, where will they stay? Back at the Tomb or down the bottom of the Heartbreaking cliff? hmmmm…

Bought the DVD last week and finished watching it today. Well, it’s freaking good during the 1st half of the series especially when the heroes joined the war. Then it kinda suck for a few epis like the author doesn’t know what to do anymore with too many characters prancing around. Luckily, he found a way to make the story interesting again by closing a few subplots. Though I hate how one of it ended. Why? It concerned my favorite character. However, just when we thought it’s over, the author tried to drag the story again spanning 16 years. That was just unnecessary IMO but I guess he needs to do it because those were the only chapters that really had something to do with the title. Thank him for making the last few chapters quick, funny, and heroic. All in all, I’d rate this series a 3.75 out of 5.

Yummy… yeah it wasn’t bad when you rate the series as a whole. The martial arts were cool (yet somehow unrealistic ^_^). I’ve only seen little faults for the actors. I could have given it a solid 5 if not for those boring episodes and the constant dragging. It’s like the lovers were never meant to be. Oh yes, there were also scenes where I was really puzzled. I’d recommend reading those chapters to provide a more vivid description of what they’re actually thinking.
Man, I can’t believe my favorite character died. I was really touched by her love for Yang Guo. I also thought her last scenes were better on screen than on the novel.
You know after watching ROCH 2006, I felt like I really want to watch LOCH just to acquaint myself with Yang Guo’s dad… When did LOCH come out anyway? Are the characters as interesting as that of ROCH?

I got your point lightspec.. it’s dragging lots of the time. It’s like if I missed 2 episodes and continued watching it I can still follow the story bcoz I’m not missing too much.
LOCH is fun to watch as well, CCTV made me some 3-4 years ago.. and there’s a few version from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Actually I like LOCH more than ROCH, LOCH is more to ‘wuxia’ and less ‘romantic’, so it will depends on personal preference.

kayz.. u r talking about Jue Dai Shuang Jiao. If 3 years ago that means it’s the Dicky Cheung and Nicolas Tse version.
You should look for title like “Xiao Yuer And Hua Wuque” or “Proud Of Twins” for the 2002/2003 version.
Else you can try “The Handsome Siblings” or “Jue Dai Shuang Jiao” but normally it will refer to the 1992 version instead.

Hmm. I read in a Philippine forum that Crystal Liu (as she is more often called here) is the #2 most popular actress in China today, and Huang Xiao Ming is the #2 most popular actor. I wonder if that’s true. But it doesn’t matter. They are already well-loved here.
Best episode to me so far is the “Chancellor of Wulin” episode. I like the action sequences there best. But still, the quiet scenes between the two leads are even beter. I’ve read portions of the novel online. Maybe others disagree with me, but I think Crystal Liu is perfect or near-perfect for the role even though she is so young. She looks that young in the book anyway.
It’s the gentleman playing Yang Guo who is a bit out of place to me. :) But only a little. He’s too old for the hero in the book. It’s still fun to watch though. I love it!

well, if who are interested to watch the full version of condor heroes. there is a disks for that. hope you could find that as soon as possible so that you will nothing asking if what happen next. but it’s to be rare to find that kind disk like that because only few selling. then it’s is limited to buy like that

ayarinoa and Vanessa.. I only have the video as above currently, I forgot if it’s the opening or closing song. I do know a few other videos that were made by the fans with non-official theme song in YouTube, will see.
