“War and Beauty” is the top rated Hong Kong tv drama in 2004, and was superhit around some Asia region as well. In fact many rated this TVB series as the best Hong Kong tv drama for the past decade.
The 30 episodes Chinese drama “War and Beauty” starred Sheren Tang, Charmaine Sheh, Gigi Lai, Maggie Cheung Ho Yee, Bowie Lam, Moses Chan and others.
The storyline rolls back to Qing Dynasty, in the Forbidden Palace. There lives the queen and dozens of concubines, with Concubine Yu (Sheren Tang) and the queen manipulating and battling one another, trying to gain the love of the emperor, and to control the power within the palace.. so much so that life is being sacrificed, very cheaply.
As if the battle couldn’t gone worse, a new group of would-be-concubines was selected into the palace, with Yuk Ying (Gigi Lai) and Yee Sun (Charmaine Sheh) among the outstanding, both have different agenda in the palace, and started to battle at the moment they first met.
On came along Onn Sin (Maggie Cheung) the maid, who was widely popular among the servants for her kindness and intelligence. Onn Sin later strategized herself to earn the emperor’s affection, because she wanted to revenge for her grandmother being murdered by the evil queen.
Arhh and then they are these 2 guys, Suen Bak Yeong (Bowie Lam) the royal-doctor and the royal guard (Moses Chan) who was initially a nobody and fought his way up to the ranking. Both man plays an important role in the hearts of the mentioned concubines and forged some forbidable love in the palace, which in the end caused some unreversable disaster to themselves and their loves.
The story plots on the manipulation of power, the forbidden love and affection between the concubines with the doctor and royal guard and the struggle to keep themselves safe and alive in the tough palace environment.
I love “War and Beauty” for its tight and suspense, the main cast are performing excellently with the supporting cast providing lots of sparkle as well. I particularly like the performances of Sheren Tang and Charmaine Sheh, I think both of them are absolutely outstanding.
I was a bit disappointed with the ending though, could be much better. On and off “War and Beauty” is an A rated drama for me, and highly recommended for all.

I like the War & Beauty very much. Not only is it exciitng. It has a lot of
suspense and a lot of mind thinking.
Among all the ladies actress I think Charmaine Sheh presence looks great. Her acting is great too.
I hope she will get more good roles in futre.

This is a show of what that happen in the past and the life of a concubine.The prettiest lady in the show is Gigi Lai and Charmaine Sheh, their sophisticated beauty and the bravery of acting makes me wonder on who shall I love the most, both have natural created features…………I luv them very much
