Zhang Ziyi Biography
Zhang Ziyi was trained as a dancer since 10 at the prestigious Beijing Dance Academy, and won in a national competition. Ziyi was regarded as one of nation’s most potential dancer back then but she felt that she couldn’t achieve much as a dancer, and decided to switch path to acting instead.
Ziyi’s talent in dancing perhaps contributed for her being accepted into China best drama school, the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. Ziyi was just 15 then and had to start all-fresh in acting and worked extra hard than her fellow students.
Zhang Ziyi movie debut was actually back in 1996 with “Touching Starlight” which was not noticable. Ziyi’s breakthrough was when she went for an audition by renowned director Zhang Yi-Mou, and was selected by the director to lead his next movie.
The movie “The Road Home” was released in 1999, and Zhang Ziyi became a popular name in China.
It was however in 2001 movie, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” directed by Oscar winning director Ang Lee that burst Zhang Ziyi into international superstar status.
Ziyi’s experience with dancing and harsh physical training allowed her to make difficult moves in the martial arts award winning movie, and her kungfu fighting still remains as some of her trademarks nowadays.
Since then Ziyi has star in multiple movies production from Asia to Hollywood. Some of her familiar movies include “Rush Hour 2,” “Hero,” “2046,” “House of Flying Daggers” and “Memoirs Of A Geisha.”
2005 movie Memoirs Of A Geisha created lots of controversies in China where Ziyi was hammered with critics for acting as a Japanese in the movie (China and Japan relationship has been in tight situation ever since World War 2 back in 1940s). The Geisha role however won Ziyi a best actress nomination at US Golden Globe Awards.
Other than acting, Ziyi can sing as well. She sang “The Beauty Song” which was adapted from ancient Chinese poem, which was featured in movie House of Flying Daggers.
Zhang Ziyi’s latest movie is “The Banquet” which was released in Autumn 2006.
As one of the most recognizable Chinese around the globe, Ziyi’s pretty face has been appearing here and there, everywhere.. and we will be seeing her for at least another few more years as one of worldwide most influential actress.
Why I like Zhang Ziyi
There are always bunch of bad comments surrounding Zhang Ziyi, some of her fellow countrymen from China always critisize her for various reasons.
I can’t say I’m a big fan of Ziyi, but I admire her for handling all the pressures and working hard on her acting career. Despite often critisized by local media, she remained polite and calm most all the time.
Nonetheless, Ziyi does have a charming appearance that is one of the most popular and lovable face around the globe.. and her contribution for Chinese/Asian movie industry is massive and deserve our respect.

I love Zhang Ziyi! She is an extremely versatile actress, and she’s gorgeous! I cannot believe that “HOT!!!” thinks that she’s ugly. And why would you compare her the Liu Yi Fei anyway? They have different types of beauty. Plus, when we speak of acting – which is after all, what their careers are, as actresses – then, Zhang Ziyi is way beyond Liu Yi Fei. Liu Yi Fei is very pretty, but I must say that there are so many people out there who are just as, if not more beautiful, and who are great actresses! Now, Zhang Ziyi is extraordinarily talented. And she was very young when she starred in CTHD as well…I think she was 19? Anyway, this is too lengthy now. I’ll stop now. Lol.

Yupe comparing Ziyi and YiFei is difficult, there are just so different.
Zhang Ziyi does have an extra edge in acting.. experience working with great directors like Zhang Yi-Mou and Lee Ang proves worthy.

To each their own I say. Nobody says we have to agree with what other people do or think, but sometimes we do have to accept that they’re gonna do it anyway.
If some people believe in dating only their own race, then so be it….If others want to date somebody outside their own race, then let them.

I’m sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with a white woman and her family. I sure understand how that is to have a bad experience with people because of my race, believe me! It actually works both ways nowadays. I’ve had some really bad (and sometimes violent) experiences myself with racism as many have. It’s bad enough having bad experiences with anybody even of your own race.
All I can say is I hope you can get control of your anger someday. (I don’t mean not be angry because that’s perfectly normal to feel that way) But I myself have come to realize slowly over the years, that we are not going to change people and we can’t change the world. You have no control over other people’s thoughts and actions. You only have control over your thoughts and how you react to others. And it will make the difference between whether you are happy or angry all the time. Dwelling on anger will eventually eat at you. And I realize it’s easier said than done because it’s hard to forgive. But you just have to try not to dwell on it.

Zhang ZiYi is very pretty, but for some reason, her movies never really appealed to me. I like Ziyi a lot, however, when watching her movies, I get really bored and I want to just stop them. I watched Memoirs of a Geisha, and the role of Sayuri didn’t match her at all. I hope Ziyi continues to act though, because practice makes perfect!

I am a white American, and I lived for five years above HK, in Guangzhou (Canton) in the Chinese mainland. I have to say, all this BS about the mainlander Chinese giving other people a hard time because they do something that seems to support Japan (such as Zhang’s Japanese role in a MOVIE, for cryin’ out loud!) or the other girl who wore the shirt that looked like a Japanese flag…boo F_ _kin’ Hoo!
It’s kind of funny how practically EVERY young Chinese (between 16-25) emulate Japanese fashion, and love their music and also the food. But the minute you say to them, “What do you think of Japan?” They will always, without fail, say the same old “party line” that their elder brother/sister or parents or even TEACHER taught them, “The Japanese are animals! They deserve to die! I hate them! Some day we will have our revenge!”….?
What? Let’s see, yes, they did kill a lot of innocent people in the invasion of Nanjing in the 40s, and they tortured Chinese with experimental prisons then too…so get the F_ _k over it!

As a Chinese teenager, I agree with Michael Lovett. Although the Japanese may have done some pretty shitty things to our country, it’s the 21st century now. People need to learn to get over the past atrocities without forget about them. The world is a global community today. If two of the greatest countries in the world can’t get over differences from a war fought over 50 years ago under entirely different regimes, then are they any better than little kids? Nope. It just shows how incredibly foolish people can be sometimes. And before we say “Those Japanese fuckers trashed our country! Let’s kill them!”, why don’t we think about what REALLY happened.
1. The Japanese PEOPLE didn’t really have a say in any of the things that happened.
2. Blaming the Japanese Emperor Hirohito won’t get you anywhere, because he was just a figurehead. The real leader was Hideki Tojo.
3. Most of the soldiers were conscripted and acted under orders. And their culture will not permit them to disobey an order given by their superiors. Two choices: Honor or Death. The Japanese valued their honor over their lives. To disobey was to dishonor themselves, and the consequence would be suicide.
4. Even if China did attack Japan for revenge, the U.S. would not hear of it. The U.S. created the modern Japanese constitution, and if Japan were attacked, the U.S. would have to defend Japan.
5. Think about it. Where does most of the world’s advanced technology come from? Japan. If we destroyed Japan, we’d destroy a major source of our technology. And no, we cannot claim that we’re ahead of them, or even near them. Our country is still developing, and most people here are in poverty.
6. Our government pours shit into our heads everyday, in an effort to suppress any idea of revolution, unrest, or civil disobedience. We are under a totalitarian government, and unless WE can do something, that makes us as helpless as the Japanese citizens were during World War 2. Because when our government tells us to do horrible things to other people, we will. And we are. We persecute pro-freedom activists, Falungong practitioners, anyone who speaks against the communist shits in control, and of course, each other. This makes us just as bad as the Japanese Army from World War 2. Even worse, in fact. We are committing such crimes against OUR OWN PEOPLE. Not only that, we do it all too willingly. I honestly think better of the Japanese than our own people. Why? Because we brutally abuse each other, yet we can speak ill of people who had no fucking choice about what they did.
